Erin Hughey PhD, Director of Global Operations. For over 20 years, Dr. Erin Hughey has dedicated her academic and professional life’s work to advancing evidence-based practices in the field of disaster management. Most recently Dr. Hughey has led a global Women Peace and Security Analysis for the U.S. Department of Defense to determine long-term solutions and operationalized capability to effectively support the identification and investment in programs designed to build sustainable peace through inclusion, justice and security for women.

Dr. Klugman's previous positions include fellow at the Kennedy School of Government’s Women in Public Policy Program at Harvard University, Director of Gender and Development at the World Bank, and director and lead author of three global Human Development Reports published by the UNDP. She has published over a dozen books and major global reports, and (co)authored over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals. She regularly participates in major global gender policy initiatives, including the Lancet Series on Gender Equality; the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s strategy on women’s economic empowerment; and the Council on Foreign Relations' Advisory Committee on economic inclusion and global growth. She is currently a member of The Lancet Global Commission on Gender and Health

Dr. Kathleen Kuehnast is the director of Gender Policy and Strategy at the U.S. Institute of Peace, where she has worked since 2008. As a socio-cultural anthropologist, Kuehnast's work addresses the different gendered impacts of violence and conflict on both men and women. In addition, her efforts have focused on the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1325, including the critical role women should play in all aspects of peacebuilding. In this capacity, Kuehnast co-edited the volume, “Women and War: Power and Protection in the 21st Century” (2011). She has been a part of the international vanguard of introducing the concept of engaging men in conflict countries in the championing of women’s rights. Kuehnast is the 2015 recipient of the Perdita Huston Human Rights Award of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area.

Bruce McFarland is the USAID Senior Development Advisor to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, responsible for strategic coordination with the Command and the interagency to support sustainable development in partner nations and accomplish national security objectives. Mr. McFarland has served in various technical, program, and contracting officer positions throughout his career at USAID Missions in Lebanon, Jordan, Afghanistan, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and Botswana. He has also served in the USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C., as the Director of Operational Innovation in the Global Development Lab and as the acting Director of East African Affairs in the Africa Bureau. Mr. McFarland joined USAID in 2005 and is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. He is a retired U.S. Army officer with 20 years of service and also spent several years in the private sector as a senior management consultant in the banking industry. He holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Washington.

Amalina Nasir is a Singapore-based analyst who specializes in Southeast Asia terrorism, specifically, spearheading research on terrorism threats in Malaysia, Singapore and the evolving role of women in regional terrorism, as well as its radicalization processes, P/CVE efforts, and policies within the region. Mainly focusing on Jihadist threat, Amalina monitors extremist accounts on social media platforms, examines the changing narratives, assesses its impact on national and regional security, and analyzes existing P/CVE policies. She has briefed various government agencies, international organizations, private corporations as well as served as a resource person for CSOs. Amalina holds a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies with a Certificate in Terrorism Studies from S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Singapore, and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Singapore Management University. She will be pursuing her second Master’s degree in Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Amalina is also a member of the Asatizah Youth Network by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, which focuses on producing P/CVE content online with the aim of preventing youth radicalization.

Dr. Parmanand has a PhD in gender studies from the University of Cambridge on a Gates scholarship. She is a Gender and Human Rights teaching fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an incoming ESRC postdoctoral research fellow. Her research focuses on gender and development, feminist international relations, gender and populism, and migration.

A former Navy pilot, Dr. Smith led diverse organizations of women and men culminating in command of a squadron in combat and flew more than 3,000 hours over 30 years including combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a sociologist trained in military sociology and social psychology, he focuses his research on gender, work, and family issues including gender bias in performance evaluations, dual career families, military families, women in the military, and retention of women. He is the co-author of Athena Rising: How and Why Men Should Mentor Women and numerous journal articles and book chapters that focus on gender and the workplace.

In addition to his work at KEI, Mr. Stangarone is a columnist for the Korea Times and a contributing author for The Diplomat. He is also a member of the International Council of Korean Studies Board and the Korea-America Student Conference’s National Advisory Committee. Prior to joining KEI, Mr. Stangarone worked on Capitol Hill for Senator Robert Torricelli on issues relating to foreign affairs and trade. He holds an MSc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Memphis.
