ABOUT THIS EVENT

In this session, Natalie Pang, Communications and New Media Senior Lecturer & Deputy Head at the National University of Singapore, and Courtney Weatherby, Deputy Director of the Southeast Asia Program at The Stimson Center, explored various digital innovations and solutions that the US and Singapore can leverage in addressing pertinent issues relating to climate change, renewable energy, and smart cities. The discussion tackled innovation in green technology and how sustainable energy policies can create meaningful job opportunities. This sessionalso explored equitable smart city solutions to support climate adaptation strategies. The session was moderated by Christian Koschil, Commercial Officer & Digital Attaché, U.S. Embassy Singapore.

Courtney Weatherby
Courtney Weatherby
Courtney Weatherby is Deputy Director of the Stimson Center’s Southeast Asia Program and Research Analyst with the Energy, Water, & Sustainability program. Her work focuses on infrastructure and energy development challenges in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific, particularly food-water-energy nexus issues in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Weatherby was lead author on lead author on a range of technical and policy studies, including Thailand’s Energy Development Pathways report in collaboration with Pact; the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Sekong, Sesan, Srepok Basin Energy Profile report; and the Stimson Center reports Alternative Development Pathways for Thailand’s Sustainable Electricity Trade with Laos. She has authored and co-authored numerous short pieces for a range of online publications including The Bangkok Post, Nikkei Asian Review, and China Dialogue. She served as a US-Japan-Southeast Asia Fellow at the East-West Center in Washington in early 2019, focusing on US-Japan collaboration on energy infrastructure. Before joining Stimson as a research associate in 2014, Weatherby worked briefly with the Center for Strategic International Studies and the State Department. She holds a M.A. in Asian Studies from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and a B.A. in East Asian Studies with honors from Dickinson College.

Natalie Pang
Natalie Pang
Dr. Natalie Pang is a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head at Communications and New Media Department, and Principal Investigator at the Centre for Trusted Internet and Community at the National University of Singapore. She is a researcher and educator in digital citizenship and well-being, as well as digital humanities and data cultures in smart cities. She has published in various top-tier journals including New Media & Society, Computers in Human Behavior, Telematics & Informatics, and Journal of the Association of Information Science and Technology. She also serves on a number of editorial boards, including Asian Journal of Communication, and the International Journal of Information, Diversity and Inclusion.

Christian Koschil
Christian Koschil
Christian Koschil is a commercial officer for the U.S. Department of Commerce in the Commercial Section at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore. Most recently, Koschil was based at the Tampa Bay, Florida Export Assistance Center and served as the Acting Deputy Senior Commercial Officer for the Caribbean Region. Previously, he worked at the U.S. Consulate in Shanghai, China (2016-2019). His primary role in Singapore is supporting U.S. trade and inward investment and his area of focus is the digital portfolio, including 5G, fintech, eHealth, and cybersecurity. A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Koschil holds an M.A. in International Commerce & Policy from George Mason University and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He speaks Mandarin, Ukrainian, and Spanish.
